Welcome to Our School

We would be delighted to welcome you to join the Wheatley Hill Primary School Community and become an active member of this wonderful school. We would strongly recommend that you contact us directly and arrange to come for a visit. We are very proud of our school and would welcome the opportunity to show you around. We can also offer support when filling out admissions paper work and making contact with the school admissions team.

How to apply for a place at Wheatley Hill Primary

Wheatley Hill Primary School is a two form entry school, which enables us to have small class sizes of 20 pupils per class. Our admissions are managed through the Durham County Council School Admissions Team although we can offer a lot of help, support and guidance in school.

Two Year Old Provision

WHPS also has a Two Year Old Provision. The places in our Two Year Old Provision are primarily for families, who qualify for the free 15 hours of childcare for two year olds. However, we do offer addition wrap around child care for other Two Year Old children.

To apply for a place in our Two Year Old Provision, please request an application pack from the School Office. Please complete the forms and return them to the Office.  We will need to see the birth certificate of the child and this information will be recorded on the application form.  We will then check your eligibility for a free place with Durham Council.  We accept children into our Two Year Old Provision in the term after they turn two (September, January and April).

Nursery Admissions
To apply for a place in our nursery, please request an application pack from the School Office. Please complete the forms and return them to school office. The school will need to see the birth certificate of the child and this information will be recorded on the application form. We have three intakes per year and children join the nursery in the term after they turn three (September, January and April).

We also offer the 30-hours per week of Nursery Education.

Reception Admissions

To apply for a place in Reception, please visit the school directly or visit the admissions section of the Durham County Council website by following the link at the bottom of the page.

In-Year Transfers

To apply for a place in Year 1 to Year 6, please contact the school directly and we can support your application or you can visit the Durham County Council website by following the link at the bottom of the page.

Admissions Criteria

Wheatley Hill Primary is a non-selective school for local children. If the school is oversubscribed, priority will be given to students with an Educational Health Care Plans, where Wheatley Hill is named on the EHCP. The remaining places will then be offered in the following order of priority:

  • Children who are looked after in public care;

  • Children who have particular medical needs;

  • Children, who have a sibling who already attends the school (not including Nursery) and who will continue to do so on the date of admission. (For this purpose “sibling” means a whole, half or step-brother or -sister resident at the same address);

  • Children who live closest to the school.

Waiting Lists

The local authority will keep a waiting list, which is used to fill casual vacancies occurring if pupils leave during the year, or withdraw from a place that has been offered. The local authority use a system to ensure the allocation of pupil places is distributed evenly amongst local schools for in-year applications (for example, when moving into an area following a house move).
