The Love of Adventure

At Wheatley Hill Primary, we believe that children should be given the opportunity to engage in a range of exciting and challenging experiences.

With this in mind, we have seamlessly integrated outdoor learning and educational visits directly into our school curriculum. We believe that adventure and exploration are critical to any child's development. We want our pupils to be inquisitive, manage risks safely, and be fascinated to explore the unknown.

One Day Adventures

Our school has invested a significant portion of our budget this year to provide children with enriching "One Day Adventures." Some of these experiences focus on outdoor education, such as canoeing and archery, while others offer a cultural and historical focus, including visits to Beamish Museum, Chinese New Year celebrations in Newcastle, and exploration days at the Hancock Museum.

Our curriculum is filled with these "WOW" moments that truly captivate and inspire our children's imaginations. These immersive experiences foster rich language development, providing pupils with fantastic, real-world inspiration to channel into their written work.

Residential Trips

Participating in a school residential trip is an experience that we at Wheatley Hill believe is a vital part of growing up for every child. We strongly encourage all pupils to attend these residentials and actively support parents in accessing these opportunities.

Every Summer Term, our Year 5 and 6 children head to the Lake District for an immersive five-day camping expedition. The children sleep in tents, cook meals together, and engage in a thrilling array of outdoor, adventurous activities, including rock climbing, canoeing, and cliff jumping.

Simultaneously each Summer Term, our Year 2, 3, and 4 pupils are offered the chance to experience a one or two-night residential camp in the Lake District as a "mini adventure." During this exciting trip, they also participate in a diverse range of introductory outdoor sports.

International Trips

We have recently returned from our Year 5/6 International Ski School week in Chamonix, France. The children enjoyed a fantastic week, making outstanding progress in their skiing. International trips are an annual opportunity provided here at Wheatley Hill.

This Ski School week involved flying to France, skiing for a full week, and immersing ourselves in French culture. It gave the children a wonderful opportunity to develop and apply the practical French language skills they have been learning in school.
